Join the Higher Education Consultants Association (HECA)


To qualify for membership in HECA, you must meet these requirements and expectations:

Membership Requirements

  • Hold a bachelor’s degree or higher from a regionally and nationally accredited, not-for-profit college or university.
  • Demonstrate paid experience as an educational consultant by serving students as they explore higher education options, or provide proof of enrollment in a college counseling program with an intent to complete.
  • Agree to abide by HECA's Standards and Ethics Statement.
  • Participate in HECA's new member orientation within a year of joining. Members may satisfy this requirement at HECA's annual conference or through an online orientation that will be offered three times a year beginning in Fall of 2010.
  • Pursue ongoing professional development through attendance at conferences and workshops, and through visits to college and university campuses.

Membership Expectations

  • Attend HECA’s annual conference at least once every four years.
  • Network with HECA members at conferences and through the HECA Listerv.
  • Mentor individuals new to the profession.
  • Serve on HECA committees, the Board of Directors, or assist with or present at the annual conference.
  • Contribute to the HECA newsletter.
  • Show respect for and work cooperatively with high school guidance counselors, college admissions staff and other educational consultants.
  • Demonstrate professionalism at all times and positively promote the public’s awareness of educational consulting.
  • For professional development, join the National Association of College Admission Counseling (NACAC) and/or your regional ACAC. Volunteer to serve on committees or the Boards of these organizations, present sessions at their conferences, and/or help at their sponsored college fairs.

If you qualify and agree to our membership requirements, you may submit your application for membership today. The review process takes approximately 10 to 14 days. Our 2010 membership dues are $150, and our membership year runs from March 1 to March 1.
